September’s Sustainable Success in UBC’s Mindful Moveout Program

On a sunny day, a UBC Mindful Market setup under a blue canopy tent. A banner on the tent promotes the 'UBC Mindful Market,' offering clothing, kitchen goods, accessories, bedding, books, mini-fridges, and more. In the foreground, a sign for 'Get Thrifty' — UBC's campus thrift store — encourages donations of clothes for store credit. A bin filled with folded clothing sits nearby while people walk and browse in the background. The event emphasizes sustainability and community involvement, which is aligned with UBC's Move Well initiative

At 604 Donate & Junk It, we’re proud to support sustainable initiatives like the “University of British Columbia (UBC) Mindful Moveout Program”, an effort that merges
community, sustainability, and responsible donations and waste management. Starting this September, we took a giant step toward UBC’s Zero Waste Action Plan by contributing the items we collected from UBC Student Residences to the UBC Flea Market, allowing students and locals to repurpose useful items while keeping them out of landfills.

What is the Mindful Moveout Program?

The Mindful Moveout Program is UBC’s bi-annual initiative to pick up donations from UBC Student Residences during student move-outs. Partnering with 604 Donate & Junk It, UBC students are encouraged to donate their reusable items, such as clothing, electronics, household items, and non-perishable food, instead of discarding them. This initiative plays a vital role in supporting UBC’s Zero Waste Action Plan 2030 (ZWAP2030), which seeks to reduce waste by 50% by the year 2030.

September’s Flea Market Success

This September, we made sure that the items collected during the move-out season found new homes through the UBC Flea Market. Here’s a breakdown of how the program made an impact:

  • Over 78,000 pounds of donations were collected, with 10,212 pounds specifically allocated to the UBC Flea Market.
  • These donations included 4,212 pounds of clothing and bedding, 1,955 pounds of electronics, and 4,045 pounds of household items.
  • Proceeds from the flea market go back into supporting community programs, making it a win-win for everyone involved.

More Than Just Waste Reduction

The program doesn’t just reduce waste, it builds a culture of community and sustainability. By providing accessible donation points and educating students on the benefits of donating versus discarding, the Mindful Moveout Program fosters a sense of responsibility and environmental stewardship among UBC’s students.

Looking Forward

As we continue our partnership with UBC, 604 Donate & Junk It is committed to enhancing our efforts in waste diversion and sustainability. Moving forward, we aim to increase student engagement, improve donation processes, and further promote the importance of sustainability in everyday life. Stay tuned for future updates, and don’t forget to participate in our initiatives to help build a greener future for everyone!
